Become a Foster Family…
With nearly 20% of our population disabled mentally and/or physically, the waiting list for a service dog often averages six to ten years long. In addition, the numbers continue to climb as our veterans come home wounded from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It is our mission to double our efforts every year in raising, training and donating service dogs to these deserving individuals, but we need your help.
By welcoming one of these amazing dogs into your family for several weeks, you will play a vital role in making someone else’s life whole again. What a tremendous gift you can give!
We take care of the routine veterinary care, grooming, heartworm preventative and flea treatment. You are responsible for feeding the required diet, collar and leash, providing appropriate toys and tons of love. Not only are your expenses tax deductible, but your selfless contribution is immeasurable!
While this service dog is practicing family life in your home environment, you will also be attending a training class once a week with your future hero. We will be providing you with valuable training information prior to taking the dog home and all the way through his or her stay with you.
After a few weeks, this young service dog will come back to our facility, be assigned to a recipient and begin his advanced, customized skill training. You will have the honor of being one of the VIP’s when we have the “Passing of the Leash Ceremony” to officially be a part of giving the disabled recipient a new and independent life with their service dog.
You won’t be lonely once they return to our facility to continue their training…the process starts all over again with another future hero in your very special foster home!
We’d love to have you come for a visit and meet our staff and our dogs. You will need to fill out and send our Foster Family Application prior to being considered as a foster family. You can call 352-425-1981 or email Louise@MedicalServiceDogs.com with any questions you may have prior to filling out the application.
